There are about 300 species of agarics in the genus Marasmius. Most members of this genus are small, nondescript brown mushrooms. The genus Marasmius belongs to the white-spored series. The plants are small, and wither and shrivel in dry weather, to revive again when wet. The gills are thin, and have acute edges. | |

This mushroom is often called the "Fairy Ring Mushroom", since it frequently fruits in rings on lawns, in meadows, and in other grassy places. It is a popular edible worldwide. Frequently growing among coastal grasses in dunes; growing gregariously in troops, arcs, or rings; summer and fall or year-round in warmer climates; widely distributed in North America. . Description: Cap 2-5 cm across, convex then flattened with a large broad umbo, tan when moist drying buff tinged with tan at the centre. Stem 20-100 x 3-5 mm, whitish to pale buff, tough, rigid. Flesh thick at the centre of the cap, whitish. Smell of fresh sawdust. Gills white then ochre-cream, distant. Spore print white. Spores pip-shaped, 8-10 x 5-6 μm. Cuticular cells smooth, subglobose. |

Marasmius alliaceus is one of the larger mushrooms of the Marasmius genus. Habitat on leaf litter, buried twigs and other debris, usually beech, especially on chalk. Season late summer to late autumn. Found In Europe. The cap of M. alliaceus is edible, but of limited culinary value due to its meagre flesh. It can be added to dishes in order to give a garlic flavour, a possibility which could be useful in the case of people who are allergic to real garlic. | |
Description: Cap 1-4 cm across, convex to broadly bell-shaped, whitish to pallid or clay-brown, often grooved or striate at margin. Stem 45-200 x 1-3 mm, minutely velvety, clay-brown at apex becoming black below, base rooting. Flesh thin, whitish in cap, grey in stem. Smell strongly of garlic. Gills whitish to pallid. Spore print cream. Spores broadly elliptic, 7-11 x 6-8 μm. Cuticular cells rounded and smooth. |
