Description: Jelly Ear Fruit body 3-8 cm across, ear-shaped, gelatinous when fresh drying hard and horny, outer surface tan-brown with minute greyish downy hairs, inner surface grey-brown, smooth, or often wrinkled and ear-like. Spores white, sausage-shaped, 16-18 x 6-8 μm. Basidia elongated cylindric with three transverse septa. |

Cloud ear fungus (Auricularia polytricha, Hirneola polytricha) is an edible jelly fungus. Normally found on dead wood or on dead parts of living trees. It is edible and often used in Asian cooking. It is usually sold dried and needs to be soaked before use. While almost tasteless, it is prized for its slightly crunchy texture and supposed medicinal properties, including its newly discovered anticoagulant properties. | |
